About the Position:

 

As Senior Officer, Events at the BC SPCA, you’ll be joining one of the most innovative and successful fundraising teams in Canada. The BC SPCA is funded by compassionate animal lovers who help us assist more than 135,000 abused, abandoned, injured, and underserved animals every year. Your work will help make all of this possible. This role leads planning and execution for various fundraising and stewardship events, with a primary focus on the Offleashed Vancouver Gala. This role also supports our Offleashed Victoria Gala, our two Fur Balls, and other events around the province.

 

This position is generally based out of the BC SPCA Provincial Office in Vancouver (Hybrid); however, working effectively from home/off-site will be required.

The role of Senior Officer, Events

 

  • You will lead all planning and execution for the annual Offleashed Vancouver Gala, in conjunction with the Development Assistant, Events, and volunteer chair. Responsibilities include fundraising strategy, programmatic elements, logistics, timelines, budgeting, sponsor structure and recognition, donor stewardship, and communications and marketing.

 

  • You will collaborate with the Philanthropy team, chair, and any committee members to optimize relationship-building opportunities and grow support for Offleashed Vancouver. You will solicit and steward a small portfolio of supporters.
  • You will lead on logistics for the Offleashed Victoria Gala and two Fur Balls in Kamloops and Kelowna and advise the event leads on annual and future event plans and strategy.
  • You will ensure events’ themes, branding, programs and messaging are appropriate and in line with objectives, and provide strategic guidance towards meeting metrics and supporting organizational Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and other goals.
  • You are expected to utilize appropriate measures and metrics to evaluate the success of your program areas and provide regular reporting as required.
  • You are supported and encouraged to develop and maintain relationships with industry peers and maintain a commitment to continued education, learning, and innovation.
  • Supervises and mentors the Development Assistant, Events.

 

While every day is different, a day in this role might include:

 

  • Developing a new sponsorship and ticket pricing structure to propose to an event committee.
  • Leading a meeting with colleagues and a graphic designer to begin refreshing the Fur Ball logo and brand.
  • Reviewing an event website and providing feedback to our web developer.
  • Reconciling an event’s revenue tracker with the data in Raiser’s Edge.
  • Preparing a schedule for a video shoot and connecting with colleagues to prep them for their video interviews.
  • Creating a list of event guests for the CEO to meet and working with the Philanthropy team to prepare briefing notes.

What skills have you developed?

 

  • Post-secondary education plus 5-8 years of experience in fundraising and events, or an equivalent combination of education and experience acceptable to the employer. With some experience with supervision, as the Development Assistant, Events position reports to this role.
  • A thorough understanding of events and fundraising strategy, efficiency, and best practices and how fundraising events can best achieve their goals.
  • Demonstrated experience:
  • Creating, monitoring, and analyzing annual plans and budgets.
  • Managing vendor relationships and fundraising volunteers (including event committees).
  • Providing formal and informal guidance and training to colleagues and volunteers.
  • Working in a self-directed environment; creating work processes and procedures and implement improvements as needed, while also recognizing when something requires escalation.
  • Making decisions in dynamic situations: surveying the landscape, determining what is needed, gathering information, analyzing, distilling, and using it to inform decisions.
  • Working with data: establishing data points, accurate record keeping, collecting data, analysis, using data to support initiatives, and to demonstrate success, need, or areas of concern.
  • Speaking to a diverse group of supporters and community leaders.
  • A clear and persuasive communicator (written and oral) ability to communicate respectfully to a diverse audience.
  • Strong organization and problem-solving skills
  • A results-oriented approach with ability to prioritize and meet deadlines with minimum supervision.
  • CRM experience and open to learning others if necessary (we use Raiser’s Edge). Experience with online ticketing and auction systems and other event software an asset.
  • Proficient with the Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Able to thrive in an open concept and fast-paced work environment.
  • Must be able to work some evenings and weekends, as required.
  • Must have a valid BC Class 5 Drivers License.

The BC SPCA compensation structure is based on external benchmarks and regularly reviewed. Starting placement on the range for this position will be commensurate with the successful candidate’s experience.
